Surrender - Let Go and Let God
[Mindful disclaimer: I am neither in the possession of truth, nor do I have – as they say - monopoly on the truth. Everybody has to seek and find what’s true for them. I am just another soul on the path of Truth (with a capital T) – whatever that means. While I travel down the long and lonesome road of life’s ups and downs, I have chosen the art of writing as my tool to dig deeper, in hope of finding pieces of clues that will help me solve life’s mysteries. Like a transpersonal archeologist, I am digging deep, working on making sense of the fantastically puzzling questions that revolve around the meaning of life and human existence. I am looking for clues to human existence that will shift our consciousness and help us see things through different, more loving, compassionate, forgiving and kinder lenses. So that we may not only transform our own being, but humankind collectively.]
Surrender - Once again I am reminded of the power of surrender. Unfortunately, in our 21st century society, surrender is not very much encouraged. Quite to the contrary – due to iPhones and other technological gadgets we can control and predict EVERYTHING in our life. Our narcissistic tendency nowadays assumes that everything SHOULD revolve around "me" and "how I want it to be". From what we want to eat and when we want it to be delivered, when we want to wake in the morning, to the logistics of who we want to date, which hair color they have to have, what size and what height. We have a plan for our life and we are determined to follow through, come what may. If, for whatever reason, there are bumps in the road, we instantly think we’ve been forsaken. Often we tend to start out on a path of non-acceptance. Like a small child in a candy store we a have a temper tantrum, we scream:, “Why isn’t it working out like I want to?!? I want it, I want it, I want it my way.”
This is the nature of suffering. When we can't control and accept the circumstances we find ourselves in, we suffer. The level of control and non-acceptance also determines the level of suffering. If you really, really, really reject your current circumstances, guess what? Yeah, you are going to suffer more - Sorry, dude! :/
This is precisely where the wonderful, extremely healing and excruciatingly hard practice of…*drumroll*… surrender comes into play.
The Truth (with capital T) of the matter is that it’s NOT your plan, but the plan of a Divine Higher Consciousness (some also like to call God/Goddess). If things aren’t working out, it’s likely that they weren’t for your highest good.
Does that make sense? Seems hard to believe doesn’t it? Because who but you would know what’s for your highest good, right?! Eeh – not so much.
From my own experience I can assure you that I don’t nearly know what is best for me. I have been saved from many a wrong decision and path that I thought were best for me in serendipitous ways many a times, and:
It takes patience, faith and a truly loving relationship with that Divine Higher Consciousness to experience in your own mind, body and soul, how unendingly loving this intelligent energy is and how it is only guiding you in the direction of your soul’s highest purpose and good – IF, you let it be. Remember that song by the Beatles?
I was watching this TV show the other day. It was about unfortunate single parents who have to raise two to three kids on their own and are struggling to make ends meet. At one point in the documentary, a dad with three young boys was served with a lease termination. The problem was that he had been struggling to find another apartment big and affordable enough for his family for years. How in the world was he going to come up with another one within weeks?! It seemed like a pretty rough situation for someone who does not have faith that everything is guided by something higher in your best interest. It turns out, however, that this was actually a very blessed situation - one of those blessings in disguise, ya know?!
Within a few days a friend was able to track down another one who knew someone who rented them an ENTIRE house, big and affordable enough for all kids and animals, with enough room to play and be a family. You see what I mean? You are taken care of; the Divine ABSOLUTELY HAS YOUR BACK. Have faith in that!
In that spirit, stop playing God and instead let that Divine Higher Consciousness take control. Besides, controlling your life circumstances all the time gets (1) exhausting, (2) gives you wrinkles, (3) belly fat, and (4) adds acidity to your body that causes cancer. Seriously, though. No kidding.
Now if those aren't four very legitimate reasons for surrendering, in case you aren't into all that Spirit bla-bla, I don't know what is.
In the end not everything you think is best for you is really best for you. And not everything that seems like a disaster is a disaster; many of them are actually blessings.
Perhaps there’s something MUCH better waiting for you that you wouldn’t have been able to create on your own, if you wouldn’t have surrendered and just had faith that all is well. So today ask yourself: Where in your life can you surrender? How can you work on your relationship to that Divine Higher Consciousness, trusting that this numinous, loving, divine, intelligent energy ABSOLUTELY has your back? Can you let go and just let God?
Let it be!
